LPAM

What is LPAM?

LPAM is an acronym for Low Power AM Broadcasting, the art of broadcasting over the airwaves on the Mediumwave band (530-1710kHz) with power levels significantly lower than traditional broadcasters. While LPAM doesn’t mean any particular service or power level, there has been a recent surge in “Part-15″ broadcast stations. As more commercial stations dump the AM band in favor of FM, we are seeing a new crowd of people move in – the low power broadcasters!

Why LPAM is becoming so popular

While the FCC runs a “command-and-control” licensing system for broadcasting, there are exceptions. The FCC lets anyone transmit on the broadcast bands, as long as they follow a certain set of guidelines (which are referred to as Part-15). With the FM band, you can only legally broadcast a few hundred feet. With the AM band however, the restrictions are far more liberal. You can broadcast up to 1/2 mile legally without a license, and sometimes even farther! Also, the band once overcrowded with radio stations is starting to quiet down, as the commercial broadcasters set up shop on the FM band. This leaves room for new broadcasters to emerge, and also creates a new use for a band that might otherwise be largely unused.

Our Vision for LPAM

Our goal is to establish a large number of locally maintained LPAM systems in cities throughout the nation, and aroudn the world, manned by like minded believers with a vision to reach their areas with the Good News Gospel of the Word of Faith! If you would like to become a partner with WOFR and help us set up LPAM stations around the country, broadcasting our Network programming, contact Harold Cagle, our President, at harold@wofr.org.
